Chocolate Festival

I toured a fun festival in Honolulu, there is a new group of cacao growers in Hawaii that wanted to get the word out about the only chocolate grown in the U. S.

There were a lot of great samples as well as examples of the cacao plants, pods, and nibs that become chocolate. There were some other ingredients on display too- looks like macadamia, cinnamon, and vanilla. Vanilla is unbelievably hard to cultivate, I'm surprised it is as affordable as it is after hearing what it takes to raise and pollinate.

The pods come in a lot of colors, like coffee all the harvesting has to be done by hand.
I found out that the cacao trees are not fans of wind, they are rain-forest plants so they have no defense against it and their leaves get beat up and bruised. A lot of the North shore growers got surprise wind storms before coming to the event so the little seedlings on display had some brown leaves.

I bought two potted trees so 3 years from now I'll have to sign up for a table to share my awesome chocolate.

These guys are a day away from appearing on cupcake wars on the Food Network. some of the little cases people used were as neat as the treats.

Some schools have special scholarships to try to level the playing field, VFS has a full ride (up to $49k) for the right woman who loves games wants to design them for a living. Game development has always been pretty male-dominated so this seems like a great idea. An application pdf is here, more info on their current scholarships is here.

This school teaches sound design, make up, writing and other useful things for entertainment careers, their url is www.vfs.com. I had to learn game design, creative writing, sound design, digital video editing, and project management on the street!

Students build the rest of their aid packages from the base of whatever grants or scholarships they receive.

Loans. Students sink into a tapestry of debt to cover outstanding expenses.
The most attractive options are subsidized loans they don't have to pay back until after graduation, but what they'll be offered depends on their income and resources.
Filling out a FAFSA form is the first step to finding out which loans they qualify for.

Employers can help too, I had at least half of my college costs reimbursed by Apple, it took forever to finish but I got my BS eventually. In the meantime I spent what would have gone to tuition on office toys.

When Collecting Worlds Collide

Hallmark made an ornament out of the Disney version of Captain Nemo's Nautilus submarine this year, I have enough ornaments to decorate about 4 trees but I couldn't pass it up once the post-Christmas sale kicked in. It even lights up!

When this movie came out in the 50's Disney wasn't the marketing juggernaut they are now, they really didn't make too many licensed toys or collectibles of this great Harper Goff sub design until recently. The Disney Sea resort in Japan has pretty big chunk of the park dedicated to Jules Verne so they have some great collectibles in the gift shops.

These are some of the other 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea items that Disney put out over the years.

The movie posters are hard to photograph well but are really great items ot add to your collection, the foreign language poster are my favorites.

This great collector website describes the cool Star Wars inspired playsets that Woman's Day Magazine detailed in their Thanksgiving 1980 issue. I love the rubber-glove-trampolines. They also have a page that shows a huge Space Station playset from 1978. Very Cool. All they need is garbage-mashers, well, Yoda might not have had one but the other two sets could probably use them. Yoda probably had a compost heap that you could hide an action figure in if any stormtroopers showed up.

New Disney animation documentary

I heard about this on the great Disney podcast, WDWRadio. It is a documentary about the great run of Disney animation that happened between 1984 and 1994 by a Disney animator/ producer and the head of the Disney film studio.
Sounds really good, it is interesting to work at a famous company during big changes (I worked at Apple when they grew really big and Sega when they were at their peak) and it sounds like they documented this time really well.

Home-made Halo chess set

This was a fun weekend project, the figures were from a board game that I found on sale. I needed 3 of the games to give us enough figures.
The raised figures are on plastic caps of different heights. I gave the kings flags to set them apart. The alien king got to hold his by the luck of the pose he is in.

The humans are so similar that I gave the rooks little castle tops to stand on- different heights only go so far to set the main pieces apart.
I gave the bishops little discs behind the figures but they didn't last long on the aliens.

The flash on my camera didn't flatter the paint jobs, I have to put another coat on those marines.

Little warthog jeeps would be perfect for knights but I haven't seen anything like that so far.

Lessons out of school

I never had any doubt there was learning to be gained by taking Julian out of school for this trip. Idealistically, I had hoped it would come from seeing historic buildings and by swimming in the customs of a foreign nation. Puzzle hunt

I got to go with on a puzzle hunt/adventure that Ravenchase put together. It was like a scavenger hunt but with clues and puzzles and codes that the kids have to solve in order to get to the end. It was a blast - we worked our way through town and ended up digging up a treasure chest at the beach.

Each team of kids got a pack with a UV flashlight, a map, some rope, a mirror, clue sheets and a really cool codex that could only be opened once all the clues have been solved.

The thumbnails are from the site's TV section; crafts for kids.
I also found a slew of projects in the 'kid's crafts' sub-section of the 'Crafts' area.
Most of the projects are demonstrated in videos- I like these segments on TV but I find that I don't have the patience to watch them on the computer.
I did see that there are some how-to's that are text and photos though so I guess there is something for everyone.

tilt shift photography

I saw a blurb about this site, Tilt Shift Maker.com, on Boing Boing and thought it would be fun for a kids digital photography class.
You upload a normal photo and use their tool to play with the focus.

Having a short depth of field with slightly hyped colors looks like scale-model photography even when your brain knows it is full scale.

This was my first try, They have better examples on their flickr group.

Star Wars Bantha Plushie

Every Tusken Raider needs a trusty bantha to ride around Tatooine. These elephant-sized creatures with long ram-like horns first showed up in A New Hope. It's easy to make your own cuddly bantha with some felt, stuffing, thread and a lot of love.

I think I have enough fake fur left over from my son's werewolf costume to make a full-scale bantha. I got to see a real bantha costume when I was a kid at Marine World in Redwood City, California. To a 12 year old it was very impressive, let me tell you. Lucasfilm had a Marine World elephant named Mardji wear the costume in the first Star Wars movie. Later in life I worked in an office building that was built on the same spot that Marine World used to occupy. and whilst employed there... I used to play the Sega Genesis Star Wars game!

merely a coincidence? I think not.
I believe I shall make a felt bantha with my kids and christen it 'Mardji' thus completing the circle.

-update-
I created a bantha but I put the horns on last- i don't recommend this as you will run out of face.

I took the stitches out of the horns and moved them to the sides of the face under the fur, Chewbacca thinks she looks great now.

Jim Henson traveling exhibit

Jim Henson's Fantastic World offers audiences a rare peek into the imagination of this brilliant innovator and creator of Kermit, Big Bird, and other beloved characters. The exhibition documents Henson’s process of “visual thinking” through works of art, photographs, documents, puppets and other 3-D objects, and film and video clips.

The show will travel through 2011 at least. The Jim Henson Company is one place where I would love to work- I was visiting their website and I found out that students can apply for internships there! I interned and it turned into my first job, I totally recommend it.

We made Sculpey ornaments last year that were a gas- pictured above is the GI Joe Diver ornament that I made to go with a set from 2006. Here are some crafty Christmas gift ideas from the get rich slowly blog, the hollow book is a cool one I might have to take a stab at:

Create a secret hollow book.
Find a cheap musty old classic at your nearby Goodwill or used bookstore. Glue the pages together, use an X-Acto knife to hollow out the center of the book. Now the recipient can store his treasures!

I think it would be more fun to use the most embarrassing title you can find.

Steampunk Hamster

I was updating a page in my portfolio and I found an old illustration from a video game that I worked on in 1995. This was an old-timey hamster with a steam powered jet pack.
I had to copy the image out of an old Microsoft Word file, it is nice that sometimes things like that work even after 13 years. There is a color version somewhere on my hard drive or on a CD.

The illustrator was a guy named Matt that worked with my team at Sega, he would knock these out seemingly without effort. I like how he added the muttonchops and the mustache to indicate that this was an older hamster. In designing the character I ignored the fact that an 'old' hamster would be like 3 years old.
Here are some more of the games characters. The only art on that whole page that I created is the metal snake, Sega was employing me as a game designer and a producer so I didn't get to do too much drawing while I was there.

If you or your kids ever create something digitally that is worth keeping track of be sure to save a copy of it as the most basic file type- Jpeg, Gif, .Txt, etc. It will save a lot of headaches later.

Film Canister Robots

We did this project a few years ago with our Cub Scout pack for our 'Cubs in the Future' activity. This would work as a Wall-E themed birthday party activity too.

It takes a few evenings to pull all the parts together but the kids can assemble the robots pretty quickly. I think we set aside 15 minutes for the craft activity and got at least 50 kids aged 3 to 11 through it. Bring pens or name labels for the kid's names.

Film canisters are usually available in bulk for free from film processing businesses. I used a small screwdriver to make the holes in the canister, an old pen would probably work also. The foam peanuts are another cheap/free item.

I cut full pipe cleaners into 4 sections and curled 2 of the sections around a pencil to give them a spring look. the other 2 pipe cleaners are folded in 2 and used as legs, spreading the ends of the leg pipe cleaners before inserting them into the feet helps stability.

We had random nuts and bolts available for 'guts.' These worked well for ballast as it turned out.

If you were doing this as a den activity and had parents helping you could let the kids cut the pipe cleaners with heavy duty scissors. less kids would make it possible to expand into eye stalks and antennae made from pipe cleaners.

The foam core cutting might work as a knife activity if you are working with those Bear scout activities, I skipped that with the kids in my first den because they were just too hyper to trust with knives. If you can't find the fat foam core you could use more of the film canister lids for feet -the price is right.

XO laptop bag

My son received an XO laptop for Christmas of 2007, it is a neat little computer with a 200 dpi screen and lots of built-in features. It is so small (around 9" x 10") that most computer cases and sleeves are too big for it.

I picked up this neoprene BYO bag at the grocery store for around $12 and converted it into a XO bag in about 5 minutes.

You can cut the threading that separates the bottles on one side and create one big pouch. I left the other side alone and it holds the charger and a mouse perfectly.

I think BYO makes lunch bags that would work also but the 6 pack bag is the only one I have seen locally.
This seems like it would work for small-but-expensive hardware like the Amazon Kindle.

anatomically incorrect models

I was nuts for model kits when I was a kid, I saved a few from them olden days and posted some photos to my Flickr pool. Some were even educational, if you can forgive the model company from putting dinosaurs and cavemen together in the same setting (and making Allosaurus and T-rex walk upright.) I forgive them because these snap together Prehistoric Scenes kits were awesome.

Speaking of flickr, I posted a bunch of images to my flickr pool a while back. The images came from my old eBay auctions and I used them to make some tiny photo-business cards.

Moo is the company that makes the cards. They are very cool and worth the price. I'll make more of the images public asap.

St. Valentine's day party bingo card

This is something I put together with clip art for a 4th grade class party. There are more images than squares so there should be some variety after the paste dries. I included one "Love Stinks' stamp for the rebels in the class.
This is a 300DPI image so it should print well.
